Is Stress Aging Us? – Market Update 10/28/2022

Here comes the snow! We got our first taste of winter this week and are expecting another storm Tuesday with a low of 13 degrees! We’re ready! Bring on winter!!

I was listening to a podcast this week that I have to share about how people who are exposed to chronic stress age more rapidly! There is increasing evidence that chronic stress leads to DNA damage that causes us to age faster. Here’s the basics…

Our biological age can be analyzed through our telomeres. Telomeres can be thought of as the coating at the end of our DNA strands, like the covering over the end of a shoelace. Telomeres shorten each time our cells divide. An enzyme, telomerase, helps to correct the damage. Unfortunately, both telomere length and telomerase levels are affected by chronic stress. The telomeres of all cell types tested shorten faster under stress. Over time there are actual structural and functional changes to tissues throughout the body that affect how our organs function.

Scientists also referred to a term they call inflammaging: the inflammation and aging caused by stress hormones. According to recent studies disease begins when tissue building hormones like testosterone and estrogen start to drop off and when hormones that can break down tissue like cortisol increase. Under stress, even the building hormones can become too active and actually break down tissues. Chronically elevated stress hormones reduce lean muscle and bone density and shift fat distribution that contribute to the onset of many diseases like osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease.

It is vital that we understand the impact of stress now because as we age our brain progressively loses its ability to regulate hormone levels. As a result, we produce larger amounts of stress hormones with age. The great news is that telomere length is reversible! Next week we’ll go to the best ways to manage and resolve stress. In the meantime get out in nature as it’s actually proven to lower cortisol and make us happier and healthier humans!
